Skin: the largest organ in the entire human body
Skin is an organ, and it is also the largest in the human body. It is estimated to have an average surface area of 2 m² and to weigh around 10 kg!
This statement is true and, for some, perhaps completely new.
We have always been used to thinking of skin as a covering, a “blanket” that protects the organs inside and holds everything together.
True, but incomplete!
It’s true that one of the skin’s main functions is to protect the structures inside and prevent contact with the outside world. But seeing skin only in this way would be like going to the cinema and leaving at the interval.
Another special feature of skin is that it has no beginning and no end. Another of its characteristics is that it differs between men and women. Men’s skin is thicker than women’s, and its thickness varies depending on the area of the body: for example, on the neck and face it is very thin, while on the sole of the foot it can be as much as 5 mm thick.
To be even more precise, what we call skin, and what we dress, stroke and wash every day… is actually called the epidermis, and it is the outermost layer.
Beneath it we find the dermis and then the hypodermis.
What’s more, although it may seem a “static” organ, skin has “five + one” fundamental properties:
- Self-repair: skin is able to regenerate after being injured.
- Extensibility: skin is elastic, able to stretch and contract. Think of what happens to a pregnant woman’s belly. That is one of the times when you can best appreciate this property
- Protection: skin shelters all the internal organs. It is your shield, but also the gateway through which certain substances pass. It also prevents water loss from the inner tissues, slowing down dehydration.
- Excretion: through the skin, toxins are eliminated in the form of sweat and sebum
- Insulation: skin is able to insulate the inside of the body when the temperature becomes too cold or too hot.
Skin: the mirror of your health
Another property of skin, that famous “+ one”, is its ability to act as a mirror.
By this we don’t mean that if you raise a hand and hold it in front of your eyes, you’ll see your reflection.
Here, we’re talking about a mirror in a metaphorical sense. The state of your skin reflects the condition of your internal organs, and depending on what it brings to the surface, it says something very specific about the state of your body.
Oily skin
This is “greasy”, shiny skin with a dull complexion. Spots and blackheads also tend to be more visible on this type of skin. Yes, we know it’s not the most pleasant image, and people who have it also experience it as a source of real social unease.
What’s important to understand at this point is that your skin is clearly telling you that your internal organs are struggling to work properly! If you’re following a diet based on very fatty foods such as milk and cheese, and junk food such as snacks, crisps, sweets, etc. …
Although there is also a genetic and hormonal component to consider with this type of skin, your body’s request is clear: change your diet, first of all by introducing fruit, vegetables and healthy foods, along with a healthy cleanse (more on this later)
Dry skin
You know what a plant looks like when it’s very thirsty? Shrivelled, dull and, indeed, dry.
When your skin becomes dry, the message is fairly clear: you need to hydrate more! Another possible cause of dry skin is low production of sebum, a substance that lubricates and protects the skin.
Combination skin
As the name suggests, this type of skin is partly dry and partly oily. This is very common on the face, where oily areas alternate with dry ones.
As well as skin type, the area where breakouts such as spots, blackheads, etc. appear also has a very specific meaning:
- Forehead: spots here point to the gut and the digestive system
- Nose: this generally means that your blood circulation needs a “clean-up”, because there could be excess cholesterol or high blood pressure
- Between the eyebrows: liver, liver and more liver! Spots in this area mean your liver is struggling. Eat more lightly and do a thorough cleanse
- Chin: this area is linked to the hormonal system, and it’s where small spots tend to appear in women during or just before their period.
Natural skin supplements
Who would have thought that so many meanings could be hidden behind your skin?!
